The unique design for this house stemmed from the clients’ proposed guidelines from Vastu – a traditional Hindu system of architectural organization. It required the main axis of the house to be aligned along the N-S axis and orient each space towards the central open courtyard. The 1800 square foot house is elevated above the granite bedrock below to allow flood waters from the adjacent creek to overflow underneath the house. Living spaces are elevated above the forest floor and provide treehouse like views of Mineral Creek to the North and Howe Sound’s Defence islands to the South. 3” corrugated steel roofing, black stained cedar siding and expansive triple pane bronze glazing units configure around a colourfully painted courtyard.
